This was noticeable after an open bag was rained on, washing the fine sand down to reveal large particles of slate around 5mm and larger chips of quartz and limestone some over 20mm.
The amount of salt in sand is not really going to be an issue. The reason for not using builders sand is that it is soft and clumps together which is what it is supposed to do when being used for path laying or mortar. To alter the condition of a clay soil you needd to add sharp sand. This is also available at Builders Merchants.
